The waste water from your basin, shower, bath, kitchen sink, and washing machine is all carried through waste pipes into a larger vertical pipe called the Soil Pipe. The Soil Pipe then takes the waste underground to feed into the sewer system or septic tank. All good so far. However, the pipe from the toilet also feeds into the same Soil Pipe and that means that the smell from toilet waste can permeate back through all the pipe systems and back into the house. How many times have you entered a bathroom to discover a smell like sulphur in the air? This is the foul air from the soil stack re-entering the room.
Usually, sinks and basins have a trap underneath them which look like a “U” and is in fact sometimes referred to as a U-Bend:
Water is “trapped” in the bottom part of the “U” and, as air can’t pass through water, this prevents smells from passing any further back up the pipe and into the room. Every time water is flushed down the drain, the water in the “U” is replaced, thus preventing it from going stale.
The FlowPlumb™ trap range from Multikwik includes the above type of trap, recommended for kitchens, and a bottle trap – which works in exactly the same way – for bathrooms.
While most bathrooms and kitchens will feature traps beneath sinks, this is usually not the case with floor drains and these are where those smells are coming from. FlowPlumb™ floor drains all feature a “trap” to prevent smells from re-entering the room so the whole FlowPlumb™ system is trapped and sealed.
An additional advantage to FlowPlumb™ traps is that they can be easily dismantled for inspection and maintenance.
The floor drain range consists of round and square drains (as above) and shower channels:
Sink and Basin traps are available in 32mm, 40mm and 50mm sizes. Trapped floor drains include vertical or horizontal 50mm or 75mm outlets.
