Plumbing as we know it was invented over 2,000 years ago by the Romans who recognised the importance to hygiene of removing waste water from human habitation. The first plumbing systems therefore were public toilets and sewerage pipes. It took another 200 years before they invented a system to bring fresh water into the towns and thereafter into homes. With this basic set up, humans existed with basic lifestyles for the next 1,800 years.
However, by the 1850’s towns and cities had developed throughout Europe and these were becoming overcrowded. It took a devastating outbreak of Cholera in 1850’s London to bring about the first advancements in plumbing since Roman times. For the first time, it was discovered that disease could be transmitted through water and that drinking water must be made safe and waste water properly disposed of. At this time, we saw mass innovation which included water treatment plants for fresh water, the flushing toilet, u-bends, and modern sewerage systems and treatment. These advancements were brought about by government regulation to safeguard human life.
Today, many of the standards and regulations that were created then have been adopted and improved upon around the world. But why do we still need to do more?
When the Romans invented plumbing, the population of the world was around 210 million people and the amount of fresh water available to drink was about 0.08% of the worlds water supply (the rest being salt water in seas and oceans). In 2018, the population of the world stands at around 7.6 billion, but we still only have 0.08% of the worlds water as fresh water. Obviously then, there’s a need to use this water more carefully and this is where good plumbing comes in. The Plumbing systems by FlowPlumb are created to the highest standards to minimise the risk of water loss through leaks. If installed correctly, our systems are guaranteed not to leak, making them more efficient and more cost effective. Who wants to pay for water that leaks away?
Our drainage systems are likewise designed to perform to the highest standards and feature many innovations to ensure safe and efficient disposal of potentially hazardous waste.
