Why you need good plumbing

Plumbing

Rome: 100AD

Plumbing as we know it today was invented by the Romans around 2,000 years ago. Having identified that waste water was unpleasant and potentially dangerous, the focus was on building sewer systems and public toilets. This was followed about 100 years later with a new focus on delivering fresh, clean water to households. Aquaducts were built to deliver “mains” water into towns and cities from springs, rivers and lakes, and lead pipes were used for household plumbing.
Plumbing

London: 1850’s

In 1854 a huge outbreak of Cholera in London was traced back to unclean water dispensed from a public water pump. In those days, raw sewerage was disposed of into the River Thames. Meanwhile, public water pumps took their water from the same river. All public water pumps were immediately shut down and new cases of cholera quickly declined. The link between good plumbing and health had been made! From this moment huge advances were made in how we deal with both fresh water and waste water. Water treatment plants were built to filter fresh water while new sewage systems were constructed under London to take waste water out of the city before being treated and made safe. New products like u-bends, taps and the flushing toilet were invented and the government imposed strict regulations and standards for water delivery, treatment and removal. Over the next 50 years as the British Empire grew to its height, these regulations and standards were exported throughout the world.

TODAY

While the population of the world has grown since Roman times, the supply of fresh drinkable water has remained the same:
Time Period Amount of water that is drinkable World population
Romans 0.08% 210m (3% of today’s population)
Today 0.08% 7 Billion
Therefore, there is a need for better and more efficient plumbing.
Why? Because bad plumbing = water borne diseases = 1.5 million deaths a year.
